This plant is designed to produce 50-100 litres of sunflower oil per hour. This level of production will consume 200-400 kg of sunflower seeds per hour which can be translated to about 900 tons of sunflower per year. The process of sunflower production starts with collecting the seeds followed by cleaning using a sieving machine.Cleaning removes unwanted material like stones and other debris. After the cleaning exercise the seeds are “decorticated” to separate the seeds from the outer cover or husk. The nuts are fed to an oil expeller where oil is squeezes out of the seeds by pressure. The oil coming out of the expeller is stored in settling tanks to separate the oil from char. The clear oil is forced through a filter press using appropriate pumps. The output of the filter press is very clear sunflower oil which can be used directly or through some other processes depending on the market requirements. TEMDO has added oil refining equipment for refining of the oil thus increasing the quality and shelf life of sunflower oil.

Refining reduces the nutrient level and flavor. It also removes particles and resins and makes naturally refined oils more stable for longer storage, more resistant to smoking, and a good choice for high-heat cooking and frying. Refined oils recommended for high-heat cooking and deep-frying are “high oleic” safflower, sunflower, and peanut oil. These are from varieties high in monounsaturated fats, which are well-suited for high heat.
